Doctor Appointment Letter Examples for Missing Work

Doctor Appointment Letter Examples for Missing WorkDoctor Appointment Letter Examples for Missing WorkDo you need to provide your employer with formal notification when you miss work because of a doctor appointment? Some companies required employees to present written documentation when they are absent from work, even when its not an extended absence. In some cases, you may need to write a letter or an schmelzglas documenting your absence, or get a notenzeichen from your doctor. In others, verbal notice may be sufficient. Workplace Absence Policies If youre not sure what the company policy is, always ask about rules regarding absence and leave for medical appointments before you need to use them. Do not assume that your current workplace has the saatkorn policies as previous ones did. Policies can also change, so the wisest course is always to inform your supervisor, if possible, that you need to take leave for a medical appointment. A weeks notice is probably ample time, unless you are involved in a deadline-critical project where you know that your presence will be missed. In this case, try to give your supervisor extra time so that suitable arrangements for a substitute can be made. When written notice is required, you may need to write the letter, or your employer may ask for a letter from your doctor. The examples provided here are only for general guidance, so edit to fit your personal situation and to meet the requirements of your workplace. What Does Your Workplace Require for Absence Notes? You may need to notify your supervisor in advance of scheduled appointments in order to be excused. If you didnt do so, your absence may have disciplinary repercussions. For emergency appointments, however, you may be able to submit an excuse letter after the fact. Some workplaces may require a written, signed note, while others may accept an email, fax, or text message. Send or hand in the note as soon as you return to work, as some employers have a time li mit on receiving them. Your employer may also have a policy requiring documentation of the appointment, such as a note from the doctors office. If this is the case, you may wish to request such a note at the time of your doctors appointment, or have the office sign a note similar to the example provided. Sample Doctors Visit Letter DateNameJob TitleAddressCity, State Zip CodeDear Mr./Ms. Last NamePlease accept this letter as written notification that I was unable to attend work on Monday, June 15, 20XX, because of a previously scheduled doctors appointment. Please let me know if I can provide any further information or documentation.Sincerely,Your Signature (hard copy letter)Your Typed Name Expand Sending an Email Message If you would prefer to email your notification, make sure is written and formatted in a professional manner. Include your email address and a phone number where you can be reached, should your employer have any questions. Choose a subject line thats clear and to the point, e.g. Doctors Note - John Smiths Absence on date. Sample Physicians Note If your employer requires written documentation of a doctors visit, your medical office may have a standard notification on letterhead that they can print upon request. If not, you should compose an excuse like the following example and have your physician sign it at the end of your appointment. DatePhysicians NameAddressCity, State Zip CodeTo Whom It May ConcernPlease accept this letter as documentation that I treated insert Name of Employee during an appointment in my office on Monday, May 9, 20XX, at 200 p.m.Should you need additional confirmation, please feel free to contact my office staff at (XXX) XXX-XXXX.Sincerely,Physicians Signature (hard copy letter)Physicians Typed Name, M.D. Expand Additional Steps May be Required You may need to follow up and document your absence in the timekeeping system, and request leave retroactively. In workplaces with stricter human resources (HR) policies, you may be on an absent without leave status until your leave request is submitted and approved. This can result in disciplinary actions by some employers if you do not follow all of their procedures. Its also a good idea to check a few days after submitting your note to make sure that HR logged your documentation, especially if your employer assigns an official status for workers who are absent without leave.

Build Your Personal Brand the NASCAR Way

Build Your Personal Brand the NASCAR WayBuild Your Personal Brand the NASCAR WayLessons in personal branding and marketing from NASCAR.While I was writing my book, The Management 500 A High-Octane Formula for Business Success, I attended my first NASCAR fest, the 2008 LifeLock.com 400 at the Chicagoland Speedway, in Joliet, Ill. I was there to binnensee what management and career lessons I could garner from one of the biggest phenomena in sports. The race began at 7 p.m., and I drove into the parking lot at 11 a.m. it was eight hours before the action was scheduled to start. Or so I thought. A NASCAR event isnt a race its an experience. If I had had even a small clue about how many management insights I would gain from studying auto racing, I would have written this book five years ago. Here are just a few things I learnedAdd ValueA NASCAR race is so much more than just a car race. Its a Super Bowl level event. The race attracted 75,000 people, and I estimate there were at least 20,00 0 people tailgating at 11 a.m. I repeat, this was eight hours before the race started. Its a giant carnival, with actual old-fashioned barkers yelling out that they had free offers inside their tents. Its a giant concert with singers and entertainers on stage all day. Its a massive outdoor mall with over 100 booths selling caps, shirts, buttons, miniature cars, giant corn dogs and even lemonade.A NASCAR event attracts every conceivable brand-name product. I walked through the largest Abraham Lincoln museum Id ever been in, and it was on wheels. I even came across a display set up with dozens of the largest and most magnificent televisions I had ever seen. The race and the organization provided value beyond its product. What is the overall concept of the value you offer and how can you deliver that value to an employer in synergistic ways that can support each other?Personalize Your BrandThe strongest brands there were the race car drivers themselves. People of all ages wore shirts w ith the faces and numbers of their favorite drivers. There was booth after booth of shirts, cups, cars and other take-home goodies with pictures of an individual driver and the number of their car on them. I bought two small replicas for both of my children of the MMs car that Kyle Busch drives and a Toyota Racing T-shirt for myself. On top of all that, the drivers themselves appeared all over the place to meet with fans. These drivers are highly paid and are doing extremely intense and dangerous work for nearly three hours during the race. However, for several hours leading up to the race they are going around and saying hello to fans. Can you imagine a CEO who makes millions and millions of dollars a year going around to customers for several hours to talk with them right before an important board meeting? Thats essentially what behauptung race car drivers do before every race. How can you make your brand more personal for employers and/or clients?Create an ExperienceThere are 43 dri vers who compete at each NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race and there are 36 such races each year all over the U.S. This is a traveling circus that is bigger than any circus I had ever witnessed. And then theres the race itself. You havent experienced loud until youve heard a NASCAR race. If you havent attended a race, then watching it on television doesnt demonstrate the speed well either. These cars were within a few inches of each other going at least 160 mph and jumping from high to low on the turns in the track. The whole day pulsated with lessons both on and off the track including branding, innovation, teamwork, strategy, execution, planning, problem solving, winning, dealing with change, and preparation. It wasnt just a race it was a 360-degree experience. I encourage you to read One Helluva Ride by Liz Clarke, which is about the history of NASCAR and also provides powerful thoughts on business momentum. Can you or your organization take your product and create a compelling exper ience around it?Make Your Own Pit RowOne of the highlights of the day was being allowed to spend 45 minutes walking up and down pit row a few hours before the race started. Pit row houses 43 pit stalls used to replace tires, refuel cars and fix any car problems. The actual race cars were sitting about 25 feet away from pit row itself while I walked up and down. This was branding heaven. A place where customers, corporations and racing teams all met in one spot. It created an extraordinary win-win-win situation. The racing teams provided additional value to the customers by letting them see up close where the cars went during the race. I saw hundreds of photos being taken where fans would sit with the crew members and get their pictures taken in the pit stalls. Every one of those pictures the fans took had corporate logos in them. That meant the sponsors would be seen thousands of times when those pictures were developed and shown with pride to family members and friends. These corpor ate sponsors werent just hidden on the last page of a brochure. They were part of the fan interaction with the racing teams at the pit stalls. As I watched all of this, several questions popped into my mind. Can you imagine professional baseball or football players letting fans look in their lockers a few hours before the game and having their pictures taken standing in front of those lockers? Can you imagine corporate logos all over the lockers and the field itself? You might think that would ruin those games, and you might be right. However, think of the total cost of going to a major league baseball game or an NFL game. I cant afford to take my wife, Barb, and our children, Ben and Sarah, to very many ballgames. We have this thing called college tuition to pay for someday. The last time I went to a major league baseball game it cost me something like $225 for one night. Yikes. At the NASCAR event, the parking was free, the food was reasonable and the ticket prices were not exorbita nt.How can you create a pit row in your business? Make a list of all of the types of customers you have. Now make a list of all of the companies that would like to sell to those customers. Could you create a unique event for your customers featuring your products and services? Could you then include other companies at that event as sponsors who would underwrite the cost of the event and benefit from being in front of your customers?Mind the Caution FlagsDuring the race there is one occurrence in the competition that has nothing to do with whats taking place right in front of the race car driver. Its called the caution flag. When debris lands on the track or a car gets damaged while racing, the caution flag is waved and all the drivers have to slow down and get behind the pace car. That doesnt seem too bad, except for the lead driver, who has to slow down and let all the other cars line up right behind him. The cushion suddenly evaporates. This same thing happens in business. Youre do ing a good job and staying focused. Youve built tremendous momentum and you are well beyond the projected pace. Your organization is by far the best in the industry, and you continually generate significant, sustainable and profitable growth. Then suddenly the marketplace changes. Instantly all of the businesses in your industry slow way down. A series of national stories about your industry immediately sends even your most loyal customers searching for alternatives.Think of the housing downturn that occurred in 2007 and 2008. Suddenly the most successful and the least successful real estate agents were compressed into an incredibly tight market. The leaders lead was no longer what it had been. When there is even an isolated incident of mad cow disease, it sends restaurants and grocery stores into a temporary spiral, whether they were way ahead of their plan or way behind. This is why it is so important to focus on improving performance and not solely on your relative position compare d to others at any given moment. Just because you had a great or terrible quarter doesnt mean youre stuck in that position forever. Perhaps your competitor made a big sale right before the quarter ended, and you made one right after the next quarter started. It looks like youre way behind when in reality youre not. When your market gets compressed how will you be prepared to win the race in front of you?I encourage you to go to a NASCAR race, but get there way, way before it starts and let the lessons on management soak in.

Why Police Departments Are Facing Recruitment Problems

Why Police Departments Are Facing Recruitment ProblemsWhy Police Departments Are Facing Recruitment ProblemsThe problem of recruitment and retention of versicherungspolice officers in departments across the United States is well documented. Many law enforcement agencies have difficulty leid only identifying and hiring qualified candidates but keeping them as well. High Attrition in Law Enforcement Youve probably seen multiple news stories about the critical shortage of personnel in professions like nursing and teaching, but probably not so much about the shortage of police officers. In fact, youhaveprobablynever heard of a study by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Analysis Center which showed the attrition rate for police officers (14 percent) is higher than both nursing (12 percent) and teaching (13 percent). Opportunities Abound for Qualified Candidates The great news for you is that most police departments are in a constant hiring cycle. With so many officers retiring o r resigning each year, there are almost always vacancies, which means there are ample opportunities for you to get hired. Before you do, though, you need to understand why its so difficult for police to hire qualified officers, to begin with, and what it will take for you to qualify for a job as a police officer. Decreasing Pool of qualifikation Police Most people understand that law enforcement careers arent for everyone, but it seems, at least anecdotally, that the pool of available candidates continues to shrink. Several factors have converged to make it more difficult than ever to find good officers, and diminish interest in policing careers. Relatively Low Pay First, even though more and more people are earning college degrees, salaries for law enforcement officers especially starting salaries, dont reflect the higher earning expectations of newer generations of job candidates. What many younger job seekers fail to recognize, though, are the benefits of trading a lower salary for an earlier and potentially much more lucrative retirement situation at the end of their career. Disqualifying Behaviors Another, even more, difficult obstacle to overcome for departments are the evolving tolerances of society as a whole for minor crimes and illicit drug use. As the culture accepts the use of marijuana and other drugs, and as the trend towards legalization of pot continues, more and more young people engage in behaviors that will ultimately keep them from getting a criminal justice job. Lack of Physical Fitness The increasingly sedentary lifestyle of younger generations, the increased occurrence of obesity, and the relatively low fitness level of so many people have also lead to a smaller group of potential police officer candidates. With the potentially demanding physical rigors of police work, departments are finding that fewer job applicants can meet their weight and physical fitness standards. Credit Issues Affect Hireability Financial con cerns, too, have decreased the pool of candidates. During the background investigation, most agencies run a credit check. While they are typically not so concerned with the individual credit score, they wont hire people who are so indebted that they wont be able to meet their obligations with the salary theyll earn, or people who have significant debts that have been turned over to collections. Plan Early to Stay Qualified With the need for qualified officers so high, you have plenty of opportunities and options to get hired in a law enforcement career. You cant, however, change your past. Take care now to avoid the kinds of mistakes that will keep you out of a job, and understand that, when it comes to many criminal justice careers, seemingly simple mistakes can have long-term consequences. The bottom line is that most police departments, especially at the state and local levels, need good people. And though the pay is not as high as other criminal justice careers, there are st ill plenty of great reasons to become a police officer. If youd like to join the force, you simply need to start now to get yourself prepared for a long and rewarding career.

I feel like Im not living up to my potential. It also seems like, no matter how hard she hustles, she doesnt earn enough money to feel comfortab le.Sometimes Thrailkill thinks she should give up her solo practice and get a job with an established law firm. Other times she thinks what she really needs is an attitude adjustment. Does she need a change of situation, or a change of mindset? Deciding can be difficult. Many peoples first impulse when they start feeling uncomfortable at their job is to blame others or the work environment, says Lisa Sansom, who puts her masters degree in applied positive psychology to work as a geschftlicher umgang coach. We dont believe that it has anything to do with us. We think the situation is beyond our control and theres nothing we can do.Thrailkill is well aware of that risk. In my 20s and early 30s, I never thought my attitude welches the problem, she says. Then you mature and have some life experiences and think, Maybe it was my attitude. The first thing you should do when contemplating a job change is take stock of what else is happening in your life. For example, you dont need to add a ne w job to the mix if youre getting a divorce, just lost a parent, or have suffered a financial setback.A lot of people get in such despair and anxiety at those times that they want to quit everything, says Dallas psychologist Delane Kinney. Your brain isnt really online, so you lose perspective. That loss of perspective almost happened to Kerry Wekelo, who is managing director of human resources and operations at Actualize Consulting in Reston, Virginia. Shaken by the death of someone important to her, she started soul-searching.I was living a lie, Wekelo says she realized. I wasnt happy in my marriage, wasnt happy in my job.Wekelo and her husband divorced, and she contemplated quitting her job to become a yoga teacher. She snapped back to reality when she realized that, financially, that would be a poor decision for a single mom. So she stayed at her job but began exploring how changing her mindset might help her situation.Becoming aware of how you might need to change is a rational first stepinfixing a bad work situation. The next step is asking someone for advice. In the workplace, consulting a manager or mentor can be useful, Sansom says. She suggests that entrepreneurs in particular have a board of mentors - people you can talk to on a regular basis who are going to be a sanity check, a business check, the ones who can talk to you when youre struggling with all the things entrepreneurs go through. If Sansom were Thrailkills business coach, she might suggest Thrailkill decide how much she wants to earn, figure out how to set boundaries on her time, and perhaps charge some clients more so she can continue helping low-income clients.Thinking through how you might be able to fix a situation, you can also draw on the red-cape-green-cape approach developed by James Pawelski, Ph.D., one of Sansoms former positive psychology professors at the University of Pennsylvania.Imagine youre given superhero powers, Sansom explains. A red cape allows you to stop all the bad t hings in the world, but it doesnt mean the goods going to get any better. The green cape allows you to make the good things stronger and better, but it doesnt fix any of the bad things. Which do you choose? If youre in a workplace with a micromanaging boss, for example, you could don your green cape and focus on the good of the job - perhaps your coworkers, your salary, or the impact your work has on the community. Or you could wear the red cape and try to fix the bad of the job by talking to human resources and studying strategies for dealing with a micromanager. Make an Informed DecisionIn figuring out her job situation, Wekelo looked both within and outside of her company. We are a consulting company, and one of my biggest responsibilities is hiring our talent, she says. I wasnt happy about how we were running our organization, and I didnt ethically feel good about bringing people into our organization. In the course of her attitude adjustment, Wekelo read Leadership and Self-Decep tion Getting Out of the Box, published by The Arbinger Institute, which was transformative for her.It was about taking accountability for every situation youre in, Wekelo says.In becoming accountable on the job, Wekelo approached one of the founding partners, who is her brother, and suggested ways she thought the company culture could improve. The company adopted her suggestions, the culture improved, and Wekelo was able to stay happily on the job. She went on to write Culture Infusion 9 Principles to Create and Maintain a Thriving Corporate Culture. There might come a time, however, when no matter how much self-reflection youve done or how many adjustments youve made to your attitude, you conclude that a job change is the only right decision, like Lori Cheek did. After earning a masters degree in architecture, Cheek followed the expected career path.I had some of the coolest jobs you can get, she says, including store planning and design for designer Christian Dior. I got flown to Pa ris, all over America. But I was just so dissatisfied. I would get to work every day at 915 a.m. and get in trouble for it. Every day there was this fear factor - about what I was wearing, being out too long for lunch. She enjoyed the friends she made on the job, but then got in trouble for socializing too much.Cheek went on to work in sales at a couple of other places - great jobs, same problem. I was still super unhappy with the stress and the hours and the fear of it, she says.Cheekdidnt like feeling owned by her employer. I just wished there was more time in the day back then, she says. I didnt want to live for the weekend like that. Finally, when she was downsized from her last job, Cheek decided to pursue an idea that had been percolating in her mind for years. She created the dating app Cheekd, which connects users in close proximity to each other. This entrepreneurial venture turned out to be more expensive than she expected, and shes putting in as many, if not more, hours than she did at her corporate jobs. But seven years in, shes thriving. Now Im living a lifestyle I love, she says. Im excited to get up in the morning, excited to open my computer. For some people, a change of mindset will be the trick. For others, a new job or career will be right. The key is taking a hard, and perhaps uncomfortable, look at every aspect of your situation before making a decision.A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.comand in the Fall 2018 issue of SUCCESS magazine.

Personality Traits Hiring Managers Value Most

Personality Traits Hiring Managers Value Most Personality Traits Hiring Managers Value Most If you had to guess, you might assume that a job candidate’s intelligence would be at the top of any employer’s wish list- but thats not always the case. In fact, there are many other qualities and soft skills that trump intelligence for hiring managers. Read on to find out which are the top personality traits hiring managers value most- and where intelligence ranks among them. Here are the personality traits hiring managers value most: Professionalism According to a survey from Fairygodboss, professionalism is what hiring managers want most in their job candidates. And it makes sense, considering that a professional worker will be a good steward of the company, accept direction and criticism well, and also be autonomous and honest. Reliability There’s something to be said for reliability. After all, if you’re a reliable worker, that means that you’ll show up to work on time and meet your deadlines when you say you’re going to. Reliability also implies that you can be counted on to do your duties during regular days, and also at other times when your boss might need a pinch hitter to come in and tackle an urgent task. Leadership Ability No matter if you’re applying for an executive-level position (or even an entry-level gig), exhibiting leadership traits is an important quality that hiring managers look for. Why? Possessing leadership qualities means that you’ll keep your cool during any kind of workplace calamity, be able to effectively wrangle errant employees, and take charge of a project that needs to be completed ASAP. That sense of workplace ownership, combined with the other traits that hiring managers value, can set you apart from any other job candidates for the position. Friendliness Being friendly can go a long way in winning over a potential boss. Having an approachable attitude, being quick to smile, and working well with your colleagues and clients not only makes you a more likable person to be around, but someone who an employer would want to have on his team. That said, forcing friendliness (and being fake) can get your job application sent straight to the bottom of the pile, since authenticity is also equally important. Confidence Exuding confidence is not only an attractive quality when trying to catch the eye of a potential partner, but also when you’re trying to get hired. A confident job candidate will know their worth, be proud of their accomplishments (but not brag about them), and offer advice on how to make the company better, if they were hired for the position. Confidence means that you trust your decisions but are also open to the opinions of others, including your boss. Intelligence The quality that you might assume would be first (intelligence) came in last in the Fairygodboss survey. While that’s not to say a hiring manager would want to hire someone who isnt smart, being intelligent isn’t the major factor towards getting hired for a job. Instead, you should focus your efforts on showcasing the other qualities that are standouts for a potential boss, and let your intelligence shine naturally on its own. Know someone looking for a job? A Look at Pixlr, the Free Photo and Image Editing Tool

A Look at Pixlr, the Free Photo and Image Editing Tool A Look at Pixlr, the Free Photo and Image Editing Tool Pixlr is an online photo editing tool thats fast and simple and has enough features to make it a good option for low- to moderate-level photo editing. You can create a new image with Pixlr, upload an image, or grab an image directly from a URL location. Its compatible with a variety of computers. Perhaps best of all, its free. Pixlr's Main Features If youre already familiar with Photoshop, youll find that the Pixlr Editor menu options are similar, both in terms of layout and in how the various options work. Youll need a basic understanding of how image edit tools work to use them, such as fill, crop, blur, and smudge. Pixlr has an Express tool that offers a variety of one-click changes that are fun, fast, and a very good choice for beginning editors. Hewlett Packard dropped a few features from its editing tool when the company redesigned its image software and this made it harder to work with. Pixlr Express came to the rescue. Its much easier to use and offers former HP image editing features plus more. It also has one-click manipulation for size, rotation, and inversion, as well as the ability to add instant photo effects, changing saturation, and different hues. Added Features and Perks Pixlr offers Grabber for Firefox, a free download that enables you to right-click on any image in a web page and load it into Pixlr for editing. This Firefox add-on also lets you capture the whole- or parts- of browser content such as the print screen. Theres also a Grabber version that you can download if youre a Windows user. Perhaps the best part is that the Grabber feature is free. Ease of Use / Pixlr User Interface The Pixlr Express tool is so simple that just about anyone can master it in seconds, although the Pixlr Editor requires some knowledge of photo imaging software. It has some nice features but theres a good chance youll get lost if you dont have some experience with this type of software. Pixlrs user interface is extremely easy to navigate and user-friendly. Unlike Photoshop, which can be intimidating for beginners because of the intense learning curve, Pixlrs tutorials show examples and present information and instructions in easy-to-understand lay terms.   Unfortunately, there arent enough  Pixlr tutorials  out there. Youll want to read their blog before diving in to get a better feel for Pixlr and to learn how you can get the most out of its features. Norwegian publisher KT Forlaget / ICT Publish? has produced video tutorials that should help you quickly master all the important basic features and tools that Pixlr offers. This can come in handy if youre new to image editing and youre not patient enough to just play around with the program. You can access all these videos online for free. Drawbacks The Pixlr Help section is not very helpful. For example, you wont find any answers if you have trouble downloading Pixlrs Grabber and you click on Help. Unfortunately, there are no support or user groups either, if youre the type who needs a lot of help. But you can read over the Pixlr blog. Youll find additional information there about how to get the most out of Pixlr. And theres always a price to pay for any program thats free. Youll be peppered with a fair number of ads while youre working in Pixlr. Some users have complained that Pixlrs features are more limited than theyre used to and that its a bit short on quickie tricks. Some of the features require that you set up an account before you can use them. Its still free. Finally, Pixlr requires that you install Flash. Other Options Of course, you can always stick with Photoshop. It also offers an Express Editor option if you really dont need a full range of tools, and the full-deal version has just about any tool you could imagine or ever need. But if youre looking for a new editor, Pixlr might be it. As for Fotor, the basic editor is free but youll have to upgrade to Fotor Pro for all the bells and whistles. PiZap is also respectable and quite handy. But why look further? TechRadar ranks Pixlr Editor above them all.

Job Interview Question Why Do You Want This Job

Job Interview Question Why Do You Want This Job Job Interview Question Why Do You Want This Job Why do you want this job? Often posed early in an interview, this question makes a great ice breaker because it is so open-ended. But you have to be prepared and focused to maximize the opportunity the question presents. This is your chance to assert your enthusiasm about the institution and the open position. Genuine enthusiasm suggests a good work attitude. It is also a soft skill that is always attractive to an interview team. When business guru Warren Buffett hires leaders for his company, energy is among the qualities he targets.  Energy and enthusiasm are contagious, and for that reason these qualities are often viewed as team-building. Increasingly, hiring teams are making decisions that favor candidates with these and other soft skills because they prove so helpful in contributing to workplace cohesion.   As you think about your reasons for wanting the job for which you are interviewing, allow yourself to truly get excited about the prospect of your involvement with this institution and in this role. And then use that enthusiasm to win over the interview team.   Focus on the Institution I’ve left job interviews wishing that I had more of a chance to flaunt the preparatory research I had done about the institution. I found that during my interview I couldn’t quite figure out where to discuss those details. Use that data to formulate your answer to this question. It puts your money where your mouth isyou want this job because you’ve done the legwork to learn about this institution, and you’re impressed. Also, if you have any personal experience with the institutionif you’ve attended an event there, took a class there or you know someone who works there and speaks favorably of the institution, this would also be a good time to share that feedback. I’ve found that when I’ve shown the interview team how thrilled I am to be interviewing at their institution, they also get excited. And then they tend to share what they love about working there. This really does break the ice because it gets the interviewers talking about what they value about the institution they represent. This will put you at ease. It also gives you valuable information about the professional culture where you are considering employment. Just as your energy and enthusiasm will make you a more appealing candidate to them, seeing their excitement about their workplace will be a good selling point for you. Focus on the position It’s also a good strategy to discuss what about the position excites you. Mention the qualities in the job post that you find appealing, and discuss how those fit in with your career plans and goals. Be cognizant of who you are speaking with and taper your responses accordingly. If you are talking with human resources professionals, for example, you can be high-level in what you mention about career goals and how those align with the qualities listed in the post. If you are interviewing with the manager to whom the open position reports, you can get specific and talk shop about the details of the open job and why you think they fit with your career trajectory. You have a lot of room to shape your response to this question. Be strategic, do your homework and engage the team with your enthusiasm.

3 Steps to Quit Your Job With Grace - The Muse

3 Steps to Quit Your Job With Grace - The Muse 3 Steps to Quit Your Job With Grace You’ve finally decided to quit your job- congratulations! Maybe you landed a great new gig and you’re moving on to greener pastures. Or, maybe you hate your boss and- let’s be honest- can’t wait to stick it to him with your two weeks’ notice. But whatever the situation, quitting your job can be awkward and uncomfortable- and if you don’t have a clear plan of action, you might end up burning bridges and sacrificing valuable references down the road. So whatever’s pushing you out the door, exit the right way: with grace, class, and preparedness. If you’re not sure how to make the big announcement or navigate your last two weeks, don’t worry- I’ve created an easy three-step plan to guide you through it. Step #1: The Set-Up First, set a firm date for your last day of work. Make sure to give yourself enough time to tie up any loose ends and train your replacement, if necessary. In most states, you’re not required to give two full weeks’ notice- but as a professional courtesy to your co-workers and boss, it’s a good rule of thumb. Once you’ve decided on your last day, compose your official resignation letter. In my experience, I’ve found that less information is better- and no matter how casual your company is, err on the side of formality. (Even the most laid-back company won’t appreciate a “BTW, August 1 is going to be my last day” email.) Here’s a sample template I’ve used: Dear Sam, This letter is to inform you of my resignation from my position as account executive for The Evans Company, effective May 29, 2013. I truly appreciate the opportunities you’ve provided during my time here. Thank you for your continued support and guidance. I am happy to assist in the transition process to make it as smooth as possible. Best, Allison Smith Finally, schedule a time and date for the face-to-face meeting with your boss to break the news. If you’re pressed to reveal why you're calling a meeting, you can say it’s just a general check-in- feel free to keep it vague. Then, make sure you have a printed, signed copy of your letter to hand over to make it official. Step #2: The “I Quit” Meeting Up until this point, the quitting process has been pretty easy: You settle on a date, whip out a formal notice, and mentally picture yourself crossing that finish line. But when it comes to actually telling your boss that you’re out of there, it gets a little more intimidating. When I decided to quit my first job, I was unbelievably nervous, so naturally, I took my quandary to Google. But when I searched for “what to say when you quit your job,” nothing brilliant came up- because the truth is, there is no script. Until you’re actually in that conversation, you’ll have no idea what direction the conversation will take, how much your boss will beg you to stay, and whether he’ll grill you on what you’re doing next. But no matter how the conversation goes, it’s important that you don’t feel guilty about moving on or feel like you need to over-explain. In fact, my mantra for my “I quit” meeting was simple: It’s not personal; it’s business. No matter how close you are to your boss or how irreplaceable you think you are- your boss will find a new “you” to fill your role. Keeping this in mind will help create some distance between you and your job, making the conversation just a little easier. But to take it a step further, write down (and practice!) a few talking points to start the conversation. Begin with a reason that you feel comfortable sharing, like, “I’ve been offered an opportunity I want to pursue,” or, “I’m finally making the switch to full-time freelance work.” And as you did in your resignation letter, pepper the conversation with gratitude (e.g., “Thank you so much for all the opportunities you’ve given me here” or “I’ve learned so much about the ins and outs of technical recruiting”). After you say your piece, wait for your boss to respond. Of course, every situation will be different: Your boss may press you about your new job, ask if there’s anything he or she can do to keep you there, or ask you why you didn’t mention anything about this before. Unfortunately, there’s no script for these situations, either (believe me, I checked!)- but if you feel pressured to respond, you can’t go wrong with a genuine “Thank you so much for this opportunity.” Your employer isn’t entitled to know where or why you’re moving on- simply when. The more professional and respectful you keep the conversation, the easier it will be to leave your boss with a great impression- so he or she will remember the great work you did; not just how you left. And down the road, if a potential employer calls your boss or you want to request a reference, you’ll be in the clear. Your employer isn’t entitled to know where or why you’re moving on- simply when. Step #3: The Last Words After this meeting, as easy as it would be to check out, it’s important to be as helpful as possible as you finish your last few weeks. Distribute your unfinished projects to colleagues, along with sufficient descriptions of your progress so they can pick up right where you left off. If they’ll need background information on certain clients or projects, forward important emails and e-introduce folks who haven’t worked together before. And, if you have specialized knowledge or a unique responsibility (e.g., running reports in SalesForce), create a how-to guide for whoever’s taking over for you. Then, and as you prepare to leave the office for the last time (after your resignation has been officially announced), send a goodbye email to your co-workers. A short, sincere note (e.g., “It’s been great working with all of you! I’d love to stay in touch- feel free to contact me on LinkedIn or via my personal email address”) will help you avoid any bridge-burning- and will keep your network strong. When it comes to leaving a job (especially a terrible one), you may be tempted to go out with a bang. But quitting with grace and professionalism- and a well-thought out plan- will help you infinitely more in the long run.

Mayers Move Telecommuting Ban

Mayer's Move Telecommuting Ban Mayer's Move Telecommuting Ban In a surprising move, Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer has mandated a telecommuting ban for all employees. As a female professional, I am pretty shocked by this turn of events. Mayer has been an icon for millions of working women who are constantly striving to strike the right balance between their responsibilities in the home and at the office. In fact, there have been numerous articles written about Mayer’s strategy to avoid employee burnout, such as letting employees like ” soccer mom Katie ” leave early on certain days to attend her kids’ soccer games, and then jump back online after the kids are in bed to continue the day’s work. By the looks of this decision, perhaps Mayer has changed her tune. The end to telecommuting? I doubt it.While this ban is sure to send some shockwaves through the employment industry, I don’t believe we’ll see many other companies following suit. Mayer’s decision says more about the type of company (and culture) she is planning to rebuild, and l ess about the state of telecommuting and flexible work schedules as a whole. In supporting this ban, Mayer is sure to drive many of Yahoo!’s current employees out the door â€" and perhaps this is part of her master plan.As technology continues to advance, our world is becoming smaller and smaller. Between conferencing software and document-sharing services, the ability to work â€" and perform well â€" as a remote team member is easier than ever before. Assuming an employee’s productivity and work output isn’t negatively impacted by a virtual office, offering a more flexible work schedule to a portion of the company is a great way to attract and retain talent, and improve morale.Telecommuting gives employees the opportunity to perform at their best and maintain a better work-life balance. With the economy still tight, employees are continually asked to produce more with fewer resources. Stress levels remain high. The ability to work from home or maintain a more flexible work sc hedule is one way to counteract some of this added stress. Is telecommuting important to you?If it’s important, look for companies that boast their telecommuting and other flexible work options. You can often find these companies on the top lists for single parents, working moms, or the best companies for work-life balance. If you’re unsure what a company offers, carefully read through their employment pages online and look for employee reviews on sites like Glassdoor and Vault. When negotiating your compensation package, include these types of intangible benefits in your discussion, and get the final agreement in writing. Be specific with things such as the number of days you’d like to work from home, or what a “flexible work schedule” entails.Should your current employer create a ban similar to the one enforced at Yahoo!, review your employment contract carefully. If a telecommuting or flexible work option was included in your contract, contact an employment lawyer to know what courses of action are possible. If telecommuting is no longer on the table, speak with your manager or an HR representative to find out if other work flexibility options are still available. For instance, you may not be able to work from home every day, but you might be able to come in early and leave early on certain days to pick up your children from daycare or watch your child’s soccer game.

7 things Albert Einstein taught me about creativity

7 things Albert Einstein taught me about creativity 7 things Albert Einstein taught me about creativity But first, this critical distinction: Creativity is - solving problems, fashioning products, or defining new questions in a way that is novel. Art is - the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination The Arts are - the various branches of creative activity, such as painting, music, literature, and dance. I bring that up because most believe scientists, engineers, programmers, and accountants cannot be not creative people. They only served as the workhorses to execute the vision of those of us fortunate enough to dance with the Muse on a daily basis. Not true.Creativity comes from the mastery of any domain. Proper information leads to new patterns and connections and ideas. Which means we can find clues to creative process in anyone from Pablo Picasso to a nameless, sweaty bricklayer.Or in this case, a wild-eyed physicist who did poorly in school.- - - 1. Anyone could have done what Einstein didAround the time Einstein shook the world with his Special Theory of Relativity paper, physicists were already at a flex point. Those in the field were already debating the notion that there was an “absolute” anything. Work from other physicists at the time, such as Michael Faraday, had decided the work of Galileo and Newton weren’t comprehensive enough. Seeds of Einstein’s accomplishmen t were being planted at all sides, as the field at large was starting to realize something called “the ether” wasn’t responsible for objects appearing to move at different speeds. The word “relativity” was already being spread from professor to lab rat.Is Einstein of incredible intellect? Yes. Did he put his own ingenious spin on the topic? No doubt. But is he the ONLY one who could have done what he did? The Chosen One who came to bring light to the world?I doubt it.Einstein himself called the paper: “an amazingly simple summary and generalization,” which is hardly a fanfare. All Einstein did was execute on a key tool in the artist’s box: The +1 Rule. He absorbed the information in front of him and said “okay yeah, but also this.”Yes, creativity sometimes happens in leaps and bounds. But typically it is chaste and quiet, slipping into professional use as easily as a river feeds into an ocean. Einstein’s breakthrough would have been equally bland if not for…2. P ersonal branding rockstarEinstein died in 1955.So explain to me why he is on a sweater from Forever 21.Why Einstein gear?Where is my coffee mug featuring Jules-Henri Poincaré, who is coined the phrase “principle of relativity” long before Einstein wrote his paper? Why do our children not play with toys from the Baby Föppl* company, when teacher August Föppl himself probably contributed most to Einstein’s early understanding of mechanical physics?A couple of thoughts:a) Nothing to do with scienceQuick, name me a the biggest quantum physicist in the game today (no Google)b) He looks like a geniusThere no chance you look at the face on that sweatshirt and think “Yeah, I want this man as my tax lawyer.”c) Instantly recognizableFor reference, here are some other physicists of the day:And here’s Albert:d) He’s a big, goofy kidForever 21 didn’t have to manufacture the face, Einstein made it all the timee) An easy name to pronounceThis matters. Say what you want, but Eins tein was from Germany. His name could have been Albert Schimmelpfennig. There’s no chance Americans remember that many consonants.f) Actually fun to be aroundProbably due to his time spent in a patent office as opposed to a stuffy lab with other people who were smarter than everyone else.g) Not shy about opinionsIn his later years, Big Al pretty much told everyone what he thought about everything. Including Jews, how to use atomic energy in a peaceful way, eliminating all weapons, and civil liberties.Today we call that “branding.” I think Einstein probably just called it “being a human.”*Someone make a Baby Föppl logo RIGHT NOW3. It’s fine to have a jobYou won’t see this quote on a poster:“A practical profession is a salvation for a man of my type; an academic career compels a young man to scientific production and only strong characters can resist the temptation of superficial analysis.”Which is basically Einstein speak for“If your bills are on the line, you wi ll take shortcuts.”Einstein worked as a patent clerk. His earth-shattering theories came not in spite of those dull hours, but because of it.This seems particularly relevant today, when everyone wants to have started 4 companies by the time they turn 25.4. Good work speaks for itselfHere are some things which happened when Einstein’s first relativity paper started circulating in the scientific community: He received letters addressed to “Professor Einstein” (which he wasn’t) He got a job offer from Zurich (where he couldn’t get a job 10 years prior) He was nominated for the Nobel Prize (but didn’t win it yet) The world does not care what your title is. It does not care how many direct reports you have. It also does not care about your pedigree (or the lack thereof). Here’s what matters: having a new idea. Executing on your vision for it.Repeating that process as often as possible.5. Divergent thinkingWhich is the term you should use to explain to your boss why you come up with such off-the-wall solutions. This is opposed to CONvergent thinking, which is what we usually consider mastery. You use convergent thinking to speak a language, do any math, or lift weights.Divergent thinking occurs when you remember that once you saw a contest on TV where strong men hurled big logs over a bar, so you set up a contest in your gym that involves chucking kettlebells over the soda machine.*Convergent thinking finds all the dots. Divergent thinking connects the ones nobody else does.*You don’t have to worry about the consequences. Tell the attendant you are working on your creative genius****Please do n’t actually do that6. Faustian bargainI am stealing this description directly from author and psychologist Howard Gardner. In his seminal book - Creating Minds - Gardner points out that seven creative people who brought about modern era (of which he considers Einstein to be included) all made a Faustian Bargain.I’ve heard that term in a different way: “A Deal with the Devil.”This is a common thread in many people who stand out, from pianist to CEO. An excellent yet tragic example is Pablo Picasso’s abysmal treatment of almost everyone he came in contact with as an adult.Einstein himself was not exactly a poster child for stable relationships, as you probably know. You probably also know he was poor at school. But it seems that energy was devoted intentionally to other things. It seems Einstein would not have been able to do what he did if not for seeing the little things in his life (like a wife or two) as “small problems.”He was more than willing to ignore them in f avor of tackling the big ones.7. Fantasy beats knowledgeIt seems appropriate to end with a quote since we started with one.(Remember, this coming from a man whose domain who respects information above all else):“The gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledge.”I love that so much I could cry. After all, if you don’t have dreams, what do you have?Much love as always ?- Todd BP.S.Share this with someone who might be interested.P.P.S.I wasn’t kidding about that Baby Föppl logo. This  article  first appeared on Medium.
